Monhegan is small - about a kilometre and a half by two - and sits well out in the Gulf of Maine, with a village of shingled cottages on the sheltered side and cliffs on the seaward one dropping over fifty metres, the highest on the Maine coast. Artists have worked here since the 1850s: Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper, the Wyeths, and a working colony that continues, with studios open on set afternoons. Roughly two thirds of the island is a nature reserve crossed by a network of rough trails. There are no cars for visitors, no paved roads and limited electricity hours in some buildings. Lobstering runs on its own island calendar, starting in winter.

What you actually see

  • Cliffs over fifty metres - the highest on the Maine coast.
  • A working artists' colony - studios open on set afternoons.
  • Two thirds nature reserve - rough trails across the headlands.
  • No cars and no paved roads - the island runs on foot.

When to go

June to September; boats and services thin sharply after. A full day or overnight.

Honest expectations

The crossing takes an hour and cancels in weather. Accommodation is very limited and books months ahead. Trails are rough and cliff edges are unfenced. Day trips leave only a few hours ashore.

Nearby

Port Clyde is the usual mainland pier; Pemaquid Point is up the coast.
