Camden
A Penobscot Bay harbour with hills rising straight behind it, home port to a fleet of surviving windjammers.

Camden is where the Camden Hills come down to the water, which is unusual on this coast and gives the town its line - a working harbour with wooded summits directly behind. Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park has a road and a trail to a stone tower at the top, and the view over the bay and the islands from there is the one that appears on the postcards; Edna St Vincent Millay wrote Renascence after climbing it. The harbour is a base for the Maine windjammer fleet, historic schooners that carry passengers on multi-day sailing trips - several are National Historic Landmarks and still work under sail without engines in the traditional way.

Before you go
Summer traffic on US 1 through the town is slow and parking is scarce. Windjammer trips run multiple days and book far ahead. Off season much closes. The mountain road is gated in winter.

Rockland and the Farnsworth are south; Acadia is up the coast.
