Garden District

The district was laid out in the 1830s and 40s on the old Livaudais plantation as a place for Americans arriving after the Louisiana Purchase, who were not welcome in the Creole quarter downriver - so the architecture is Greek Revival and Italianate with deep galleries, set back in gardens rather than built to the street line as in the Vieux Carre. Live oaks arch over the streets. The St Charles streetcar, running since 1835, is the oldest continuously operating street railway in the world and passes along the edge. Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, with its above-ground tombs, is in the middle of the district; access has been restricted for repairs in recent years.

October to April; summer here is severe. Half a day.

Good to know

Nearly all houses are private - this is a walk past facades. Cemetery access has been closed or restricted for long periods. Summer heat and humidity are punishing. The streetcar is slow and crowded.
