Poverty Point

Poverty Point is remarkable for who built it rather than how it looks. Around three thousand two hundred years ago, people who were hunter-gatherers rather than farmers moved something like three quarters of a million cubic metres of earth by hand, in basket-loads, to raise six concentric C-shaped ridges facing a bayou, along with a bird-shaped mound around twenty metres high. Building on that scale without agriculture, draught animals or permanent surplus overturns a lot of assumptions about what such societies could do. Objects found here came from hundreds of kilometres away, and the site was a hub for trade in stone. What you see today is subtle: low grassy ridges best understood from the observation tower or on the tram tour, with a good museum of the finds.

• The concentric ridges - six C-shaped earthen ridges facing the bayou.
• Mound A - the great bird-shaped mound, raised in a remarkably short period.
• The museum - stone tools and trade objects from across the continent.
• The tram tour - the guided circuit that makes the layout legible.

When to go

October to April is the comfortable season; Louisiana summers are hot and humid with heavy insects. The tram tour runs seasonally and makes an enormous difference to understanding the site, so check times. Low winter sun shows the ridges best.

Honest expectations

Visually it is very subtle, low grass ridges that most people would walk across without noticing, so this is a site for the imagination and the museum rather than spectacle. It is genuinely remote in northeastern Louisiana, a long way from anywhere. Take the tram or a guide, or you will miss the point entirely.
