Edinburgh is one of the most dramatic capital cities in Europe, built across crags and valleys with a brooding castle atop an ancient volcanic rock. Its UNESCO heart pairs the medieval Old Town, a warren of steep closes and wynds tumbling down the Royal Mile, with the elegant Georgian New Town of graceful squares. In August it explodes into the world's greatest arts festival, the Fringe.

When to go
Late spring to early autumn for the mildest weather; August for the Fringe and festivals, when the city is electric but packed and dear. Scotland is changeable, so pack for rain and wind any time, and Hogmanay brings a famous new year.

In August the festivals fill every bed and the streets throng, so book far ahead and expect crowds and high prices; other months are calmer. The weather is famously changeable and often wet and windy. The Old Town is steep and stepped, tiring on the legs.
