The crabs are brown crabs like any others, but the ground they come from is a chalk reef running offshore, the largest in Europe, which slows their growth and produces smaller shells with a higher proportion of meat and a sweeter taste; the name has held protected designation status since 2025. The fleet works from the beach itself, because Cromer has no harbour: boats are hauled up the sand by tractor and launched back down, a method that has been abandoned almost everywhere else on the English coast. Pots are set on the reef within a few miles and hauled daily in season. The crabs are usually sold dressed, picked and returned to the shell, from small shops along the front, and eaten cold with bread and vinegar rather than cooked further.

What you actually see

  • The beach-launched boats - tractors hauling crab boats over the sand.
  • The chalk reef stock - smaller shells with a higher meat ratio.
  • The dressed crab - picked meat returned to the shell, sold cold.
  • The protected name - designation status granted in 2025.

When to go

April to September is the main season, with the best crab from late spring onward; supply drops sharply in winter when the boats work less. Cromer Crab and Lobster Festival runs in May.

Honest expectations

Crab sold as Cromer crab elsewhere is often not from the reef. The town is a modest seaside resort rather than a scenic port, and the fishing fleet is now small, at a handful of boats. Fresh dressed crab sells out by early afternoon in season.

Nearby

Sheringham is west along the coast; the Broads and Norwich lie south.
