Burrell Collection

William Burrell made his money in shipping, buying vessels cheaply in slumps and selling in booms, and spent it on art for sixty years. In 1944 he gave around nine thousand objects to Glasgow with conditions, the strictest being that they be housed in a rural setting at least sixteen miles from the city to keep them clear of industrial air pollution; no site could be found for decades until Pollok Country Park was gifted in 1967, satisfying the spirit of the condition inside the city. The building opened in 1983 with medieval doorways and windows built into its own fabric so that visitors pass through them. Holdings include Chinese ceramics, medieval tapestries and stained glass, Islamic art, Degas and Cézanne, and Rodin's Thinker. It reopened in 2022 after a six-year refurbishment. Entry is free.

When to go

Year-round; free and indoors. Autumn colour in Pollok Park makes the glazed galleries particularly good. Weekends bring families to the park, but the galleries stay manageable.

Practical notes

The building sits well inside a large park, so the walk from public transport is fifteen minutes or more. The collection is enormous and eclectic rather than focused, which some find unsatisfying. Parking is limited on busy days.

Pollok House and the Highland cattle fold are in the same park; central Glasgow is fifteen minutes by train.
