Old Dubai and the Souks

Away from the glittering towers, old Dubai gathers around the Creek, the tidal inlet where the city began as a pearling and trading port. Here the restored Al Fahidi historic quarter preserves narrow lanes and traditional wind-tower houses, the bustling gold and spice souks glitter and perfume the air, and wooden abra water taxis ferry people across the creek, offering a glimpse of the older, gentler Arabia beneath the modern spectacle.

When to go

November to March for pleasant weather for walking the souks and creekside; evenings are cooler and the souks liveliest. The cheap abra ride across the creek at dusk is a delight.

Practical notes

The souks are atmospheric but touristy, and the traders can be pushy, with haggling expected and gold sold by weight. The 'old' quarter is largely restored rather than ancient, as Dubai is a young city. It is a refreshing contrast to the malls and towers, but on a smaller, gentler scale.
