Shevchenkivskyi Hai

The museum covers about eighty hectares of wooded hillside in Lviv and holds well over a hundred buildings moved here from Boyko, Lemko, Hutsul and Podillia villages: timber churches, farmsteads, forges, mills and a school, arranged by region with their interiors furnished. Several of the churches are eighteenth century. It is the largest collection of its kind in western Ukraine and gives the clearest sense of how the regions built differently.

When to go

April to October is the season and the buildings are open then; winter access is limited to the grounds. Weekends bring events and craft demonstrations. Autumn colour on the hillside is good.

Things to know

Many buildings are locked outside the summer season and only viewed from outside. The site is large and hilly with a lot of walking. Labelling is mostly in Ukrainian.

Lychakiv Cemetery is nearby, and Lviv's old town is west.
