The museum occupies about ten hectares of reclaimed colliery and limestone-quarry land, onto which historic Black Country buildings have been dismantled and rebuilt since 1978: back-to-back houses, a chainmaker's workshop, a chemist, a school, a Methodist chapel and a whole 1930s shopping street added in 2023. Costumed staff work the trades rather than describe them, so the forge is lit and the chain is made. Fish and chips are fried in beef dripping in a coal-fired range. Trolleybuses and trams run on site. Boat trips go into the Dudley Tunnel, where there is no towpath, so boats were traditionally moved by leggers lying on their backs and walking along the tunnel roof, and the modern trip is drawn through by the same method in part.

What you actually see

  • The rebuilt village - houses, shops and workshops moved brick by brick since 1978.
  • The working trades - lit forges, chainmaking and glass cutting done live.
  • The Dudley Tunnel - boat trips through a canal tunnel with no towpath.
  • The coal-fired chip shop - fish fried in dripping on a period range.

When to go

April to October for the fullest programme, when most buildings are staffed and the transport runs; winter opening is reduced with fewer demonstrations. Tickets are valid for a year, so a return visit is free.

Honest expectations

The site is large and entirely outdoors between buildings, so weather matters a great deal. Not every building is open or staffed on any given day. Peaky Blinders filming here raised visitor numbers sharply and school holidays are crowded.

Nearby

Dudley Castle and Dudley Zoo adjoin; Birmingham lies east.
