Ironbridge Gorge

Abraham Darby smelted iron with coke at Coalbrookdale in 1709, which made the metal cheap enough to build with, and seventy years later his grandson cast the ribs for a bridge over the Severn. It went up in 1779 with no rivets and no bolts: the ironwork is jointed like carpentry, using dovetails and wedges, because nobody had yet worked out another way. The bridge still stands, closed to vehicles and repainted in 2018 in the red-brown it wore when new. Around it the gorge holds ten museums, from a rebuilt Victorian town with a working foundry to the china and decorative tile works that grew on the same clay and coal.

• The Iron Bridge - a single 30-metre span of cast iron, jointed like timber.
• Blists Hill - a rebuilt Victorian town with working trades and old currency.
• Coalbrookdale - the furnace where coke smelting began, under a glass canopy.
• Coalport and Jackfield - the china works and the tile factory along the river.

When to go

The museums open year-round but the outdoor sites, Blists Hill above all, are much better between April and October. A passport ticket covering all ten sites only pays off if you stay two days. Weekdays in term time are quiet. The gorge road is narrow and parking near the bridge is tight in summer.

Honest expectations

Ten museums strung along several miles is more driving than most people expect, and doing it in one day means rushing. Individual tickets add up fast. Blists Hill leans towards costumed re-enactment, which not everyone wants. The bridge itself takes five minutes to see, and visitors who come only for it often feel short-changed.
