Myhiya

At Myhiya the Southern Buh drops through a granite bed and breaks into rapids, which makes this the centre of Ukrainian whitewater: rafting and kayaking run here through the season, with grades that rise in spring meltwater and fall to something gentle by late summer. The banks are granite outcrops and oak wood, part of the Buh Guard national park, and rock climbing routes have been bolted on the crags above the water.

When to go

April to June is the strongest water and the best rafting. By August the river is low and the runs are gentle. Weekends in summer are crowded with camps.

Honest expectations

Water levels vary enormously and late-summer trips can be tame. Camping pressure on the banks is heavy and litter is a problem. Safety standards between operators vary.
