The Source of the Nile, Jinja

At Jinja in eastern Uganda lies one of the most historically significant spots in Africa, the source of the Nile, the point where the world's longest river begins its epic 6,600-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean, flowing out of the vast Lake Victoria. Long sought by Victorian explorers, the spot is marked and visited by boat, while Jinja itself has become the adventure capital of East Africa, famous for the thrilling white-water rafting, kayaking and bungee jumping on the powerful young Nile.

When to go

Year-round, as the river flows constantly; the drier months, June to September and December to February, are the most comfortable. The rafting runs year-round and is the big draw. It is an easy trip from Kampala or a stop en route to the eastern parks.

Honest expectations

The source itself is a historically and symbolically significant spot rather than a visually dramatic one, marked by a small point where the river leaves the lake, seen on a short boat trip; note that the building of dams has altered and submerged the original Ripon Falls. The real draw for many is the world-class white-water rafting and adventure scene. Jinja is a relaxed, pleasant town and an easy trip from Kampala.
