Kagulu Rock

Kagulu Rock is a granite dome rising above the flat country of Busoga in eastern Uganda, and Basoga tradition holds that Prince Mukama, the founder of the Busoga kingdoms, first settled here on arriving from the north. Concrete steps and handrails have been fitted to the climbing route, taking around half an hour to the top, from which the country runs flat in every direction. A caves system at the base is associated with the same tradition.

When to go

June to September and December to March are driest. Early morning is coolest for the climb. The rock is dangerous when wet.

Honest expectations

The steps are in variable condition and some sections are exposed. There is no shade on the climb. Facilities at the site are minimal.
