Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Bigodi is a swamp on the edge of Kibale forest run entirely by the local community, whose association has used the income to build a school and a clinic, and it is often cited as one of the better community tourism projects in the region. A boardwalk and trail circuit of a few hours goes through papyrus and swamp forest, and eight primate species occur along it including red colobus and grey-cheeked mangabey. Around two hundred bird species have been recorded.

When to go

June to September and December to February are drier. Early morning is best for primates and birds. The boardwalk is passable in most weather.

Before you go

The swamp is wet and boots are needed; they are usually available for hire. Guides are compulsory and included in the fee. Primate sightings depend on the day.
