Before the causeway and the roads, people on Middle and North Caicos walked between settlements along the coast, wading the shallow crossing between the islands at low tide, and the path they used has been reopened as a marked trail. It runs along the north coast on limestone clifftops and down to the coves between them, past Mudjin Harbour, Dragon Cay and stretches where the rock is undercut and the Atlantic breaks below. Sections are old cart track walled with stone. It is exposed the whole way, with no shade, and the views along the cliff line are the best in the territory.

What you actually see

  • The clifftop sections - undercut limestone with the Atlantic below.
  • Mudjin Harbour - the cove the trail passes above.
  • The stone-walled track - surviving stretches of the old route.
  • Dragon Cay - the rock offshore at the harbour mouth.

When to go

November to May is the driest and coolest. Early morning is the only comfortable time, since the trail is fully exposed. Carry water. The full route takes several hours; most people walk the section around Mudjin Harbour.

Honest expectations

There is no shade, no water and no shelter on any part of it, and the limestone is sharp underfoot. Marking is patchy and sections have been damaged by hurricanes. The clifftops are undercut in places with no barrier. It is on an island with very limited emergency services.

Nearby

Mudjin Harbour is on the route; Bambarra Beach is at the southern end.
