Bottle Creek Lagoon

Bottle Creek is the shallow lagoon lying between North and Middle Caicos, mangrove-fringed and only knee to waist deep across much of it, and the causeway that links the two islands runs across it. Flamingos feed on the flats, bonefish work the shallows and the whole system is part of the Ramsar wetland covering this side of the islands. The village of the same name sits on the North Caicos shore. The causeway was built in 2007 and joined two islands that had always been separate.

What you actually see

• The shallow flats - water only knee to waist deep across much of it.
• The flamingos - the birds feeding on the lagoon flats.
• The bonefish - the species the shallows are fished for.
• The causeway - the road link running across the lagoon.

When to go

December to April is the dry high season. Flamingo numbers vary through the year. Tide governs the flats.

Honest expectations

Viewing is largely from the causeway and the birds are often distant. There are no facilities or hides. Bonefishing needs a guide arranged in advance.
