Laguna Guanaroca

Guanaroca is a brackish lagoon connected to the Bay of Cienfuegos, protected as a natural park, and it holds a resident population of Caribbean flamingo along with pelicans, herons and a good list of waders. A short walk through dry forest and mangrove leads to the water, where a guide rows visitors out towards the flocks. The birds keep their distance and the boats do not approach closely, which is the correct arrangement and means binoculars matter. The forest walk in has its own interest, including large old ceiba trees.

• The mangrove edge - the fringe where the lagoon meets the forest.
• The dry forest trail - the walk in, with ceiba and other large trees.

When to go

November to April is the dry season and the best for numbers. Early morning is when the birds are active and the light is usable; by mid-morning the heat builds and the flocks settle. Tours run to fixed departure times.

Before you go

Visits are guided and run to set times, so arriving casually can mean waiting or being turned away. The flamingos are distant and a phone camera will produce pink specks. There is no shade on the water.

Cienfuegos is twenty minutes north and Rancho Luna beach is on the same road south.
