The pottery capital of Tunisia on Cap Bon, with kilns, tile workshops and a large Friday market.

Nabeul stands on the site of Roman Neapolis and has been the pottery centre of Tunisia for a very long time, with workshops turning out glazed tiles, bowls and jars in the blue, green and yellow palette associated with the town, some of it in Andalusian patterns brought by refugees from Spain. The Friday market is one of the largest in the country. A small archaeological museum holds mosaics and a Punic site sits on the edge of town.

When to go
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable. The Friday market is the busiest day by far. Summer is hot and the coast is crowded.
Good to know
The Friday market is heavily geared to bus tours and prices reflect it. Much of the pottery sold is now mass-produced rather than hand-thrown. The town centre is congested on market day.
