Haidra
A Roman and Byzantine site near the Algerian border, with a large fortress and a well-preserved arch.

Ammaedara at Haidra was one of the earliest Roman military bases in Africa, founded for the Third Augustan Legion, and it later became a substantial town. The Arch of Septimius Severus of 195 stands almost intact across the old road, and the Byzantine fortress built in the sixth century is one of the largest in North Africa, its walls and towers still standing to considerable height. Churches, a market and a mausoleum lie among the ruins.

When to go
April to October is comfortable; the high plains are cold in winter. Mornings are best for light on the arch. The site is open daily.

It is very remote, close to the Algerian border, and the drive is long. There are almost no facilities. The site is spread out and walking it takes time in the open.
