Ammaedara at Haidra was one of the earliest Roman military bases in Africa, founded for the Third Augustan Legion, and it later became a substantial town. The Arch of Septimius Severus of 195 stands almost intact across the old road, and the Byzantine fortress built in the sixth century is one of the largest in North Africa, its walls and towers still standing to considerable height. Churches, a market and a mausoleum lie among the ruins.

What you actually see

  • The Arch of Septimius Severus - a triumphal arch of 195 standing almost complete.
  • The Byzantine fortress - one of the largest in North Africa, with high standing walls.
  • The churches - several basilicas spread across the site.
  • The legionary origin - the base of the Third Augustan Legion.

When to go

April to October is comfortable; the high plains are cold in winter. Mornings are best for light on the arch. The site is open daily.

Honest expectations

It is very remote, close to the Algerian border, and the drive is long. There are almost no facilities. The site is spread out and walking it takes time in the open.

Nearby

Kasserine is east, and Makthar is northeast.
