Aripo Caves

The Aripo caves are the largest known system in Trinidad, cut into limestone in the Northern Range and reached by a hard forest walk of several hours from Aripo village. Inside is a colony of oilbirds, the nocturnal fruit-eating birds that navigate by echolocation and nest on ledges in complete darkness, along with bats and cave-dwelling invertebrates. It is a serious trip requiring a guide, lights and a willingness to get wet.

When to go

January to May is the dry season and the only sensible window; the approach river rises fast in the rains. Guides must be arranged in advance from Aripo village. Full-day trips only.

Good to know

This is a demanding trip, several hours of rough walking each way plus wet caving, and not suitable for the unfit. A guide is essential and must be arranged locally. Disturbing the oilbirds causes them to abandon nests, so numbers and behaviour matter.
