The Inati Share

Tokelau divides its ocean by covenant: the inati system takes the communal catch - the day's fish landed by the village's effort - and parts it on the distribution ground into equal shares for every household, elders' portions honoured, absentees remembered, the divider's craft watched by all in the transparency that is the point. The system's arithmetic is culture as economics: no household unfished, no hoarding logic, the lagoon's yield socialised by rule older than any administration. Visitors watch by courtesy from the edges; the lesson - a working commons, still working - travels home better than any souvenir. The system covers fish, and at times other goods, and applies across all three atolls.
