The Fatele

Tokelau's heart performs as the fatele: the dance-song form where a seated chorus and log-drum percussion start low and climb - verses repeating faster, louder, higher as the standing dancers' rows drive the crescendo - until the finish lands in the unified shout that is the atolls' signature sound. Fatele carries welcomes, church celebrations and inter-village pride (competition sharpens the form's edges), costume runs to woven titi and flower crowns, and visitors present at an occasion receive the performance's welcome version with the expectation of joyful witness - and often the laughing invitation to join the back row. Villages compose new songs for each occasion, and the words often comment on recent events on the atoll.
