Atafu Atoll

Atafu, the smallest and northernmost of Tokelau's three atolls, is a compact and tightly-knit coral ring enclosing a clear, sheltered lagoon, and is often regarded as the most traditional of the atolls, where old Tokelauan ways are most strongly preserved. Its entire community lives closely together in a single tidy village on one islet, following a deeply communal life centred on the church, the family and the sea. Atafu is especially known for keeping alive traditional skills, above all the building of the elegant Tokelauan outrigger canoes, still crafted and sailed here as they have been for generations. Encircled by reef and abundant marine life, and reached only by a long sea voyage, Atafu offers an authentic and moving glimpse of a way of life that endures.

When to go

May to October, the drier and cooler season, brings the most settled weather and calmest seas for the voyage and for exploring the lagoon and reef; the equatorial climate is warm year-round. Calm conditions are best for the sea and reef around the atoll.

Honest expectations

Atafu, like all Tokelau, is reached only by a long, infrequent boat voyage from Samoa, with minimal facilities and a small traditional community, so visiting requires real commitment, permission and respect. As the most traditional of Tokelau's atolls, where old ways and canoe-building endure most strongly, a compact coral ring of clear lagoon and living heritage, though, Atafu offers a genuinely authentic and moving experience.
