Getting thereAt Laleia on the north coast road east of Manatuto; roadside
EntryFree; access outside services

The church at Laleia on the north coast road east of Manatuto was built in the 1930s on a nineteenth-century foundation and is among the oldest and best preserved Portuguese churches in Timor-Leste, a solid white building with a bell tower standing above the road and the sea. The interior is plain. It is a landmark on the drive between Dili and Baucau and remains an active parish church.

What you actually see

  • The white church - the solid building with its bell tower above the road.
  • The bell tower - the feature that makes it a landmark on the coast road.
  • The plain interior - the simple space inside.
  • The coastal position - the church between the road and the sea.

When to go

May to November is the dry season and the roads are best. The church is generally open around services. Services take priority.

Honest expectations

The interior is plain and the visit is short. Access depends on the parish and it may be locked. It is a roadside stop rather than a destination.

Nearby

Manatuto is west, and Baucau is east.
