Thong Pha Phum National Park

The park covers about 1,120 square kilometres of the Tenasserim hills along the Myanmar border in western Kanchanaburi. Its draw is a set of cabins and camping pitches on a ridge around 1,200 metres, positioned so that on cold-season mornings you look down on cloud filling the valleys below - the thale mok, sea of mist, that Thai domestic tourism is built around in the cool months. Cabins are simple and must be booked through the national park system, often well in advance for weekends between November and February. The access road from Thong Pha Phum climbs steeply on a narrow surface with hairpins and is genuinely difficult in a low car or in rain; four-wheel drive is the standard advice. Nights on the ridge are cold by Thai standards, sometimes near freezing, which visitors from the lowlands consistently underestimate. Elsewhere in the park are hot springs and waterfalls.

When to go

November to February, which is both the mist season and the only time the ridge is reliably worth the drive. Book cabins well ahead for weekends.

Honest expectations

The access road is steep, narrow and difficult - four-wheel drive is strongly advised and low cars struggle. Nights are genuinely cold; bring warm clothing. Facilities are basic. Booking is essential.
