Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall

Bua Tong falls over travertine rather than the usual slick rock, and that difference is the whole point: mineral deposits build a grippy, porous crust that boots slide on but bare feet hold. People climb the tiers straight up through the water, using fixed ropes on the steeper sections, and the sensation is closer to walking up a wet staircase than scrambling a waterfall. The site sits in Si Lanna National Park about sixty kilometres north of Chiang Mai, next to the Chet Si spring that feeds it, a clear pool bubbling out of the ground that supplies the whole system year-round. Entry is free, which is rare enough in Thailand to be worth stating plainly.

When to go

Water runs all year because the spring feeds it, so this does not dry out the way other northern falls do in the hot season. Weekday mornings are quiet; Saturdays and Sundays bring Chiang Mai families and a full car park by ten. Rain makes the approach path muddy without making the rock slippery, so a wet-season visit still works.

Honest expectations

You need your own transport, roughly ninety minutes each way from Chiang Mai, and no public bus goes there. Green algae patches on some rocks really are slippery, unlike the tufa around them. Facilities amount to toilets and a few food stalls, changing space is improvised, and the climb is short but delivers scrapes to anyone who rushes it.
