Ban Pa Bong Piang

Ban Pa Bong Piang is a Pgakenyaw Karen village in Mae Chaem district, and the terraces below it are among the most photographed agricultural landscapes in Thailand - stepped paddies following the contours around a valley head, worked by hand and fed by hillside water channels, in a system the community has farmed for generations. The timing is everything: the terraces are flooded and reflective from around June, deep green through August and September, and turn gold before harvest in late October and early November, after which they are stubble and mud. Homestays and simple camping in the village are the accommodation, and staying is how the money reaches the people who farm it. The access road is unsealed, steep and rutted, and is genuinely difficult in the rains - which overlaps with the green season - so a pickup transfer or four-wheel drive is the standard advice. These are working fields; walking on the bunds damages them.

When to go

August for the deepest green, late October to early November for the gold before harvest. Outside those windows the terraces are bare mud or stubble.

Honest expectations

The access road is rough and difficult in the rains - four-wheel drive or a local pickup. Accommodation is basic homestay and camping. These are working fields; stay off the bunds. The photogenic window is short.
