Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

Bohol is known for limestone hills and beaches, not for terracing, which is why Cadapdapan surprises people: a valley in Candijay on the island's eastern side where the slopes have been cut into stepped paddies, small and irregular compared with Ifugao's but green and worked, with Can-umantad Falls dropping over the edge of the ridge below them. A viewing deck and a restaurant sit at the top of the valley looking down over both, and the standard visit takes in the terraces from above and then the walk down to the waterfall. The scale is modest - this is a farming valley rather than a landscape of national significance - but the combination of terraces, waterfall and the quiet far end of Bohol makes it worth the drive from Tagbilaran, and it goes naturally with Anda's beaches an hour further on.

When to go

June to November for the greenest fields after planting; the dry months turn the terraces brown but make the paths easier. Mornings are quiet.

What to expect

The terraces are small in scale - do not expect Ifugao. The path down to the falls is steep and slippery. It is two and a half hours from Tagbilaran on ordinary roads.
