Jiabang Rice Terraces

The Jiabang terraces run along steep slopes above the Miao and Dong villages of Congjiang county, narrower and more irregular than the famous terraces of Yunnan or Guangxi because the ground is steeper, and they are worked by hand and with buffalo. What makes them photographed is the weather: warm damp air rising from the valleys condenses overnight, so cloud pools between the ridges at dawn and the terraces appear as lines emerging from white. Flooding in spring turns them to mirrors, and September brings the gold before harvest. Simple guesthouses in the villages let visitors be in place before first light.

When to go

April to June for flooded mirrors and September to October for gold; dawn is the hour for cloud. Winter is bare. Rain is frequent and can cancel the view entirely.

Practical notes

The cloud effect depends on conditions and fails on many mornings. Roads are rough and transport limited without a car. Guesthouses are basic and cold outside summer.
