Daraja la Mungu

Daraja la Mungu means God's bridge, and it is a span of rock crossing the Kiwira river near Tukuyu, formed when lava from the Rungwe volcanic field flowed over the stream and cooled, leaving the water running through a tunnel beneath. People walk across it. A short distance downstream is the Kijungu boiling pot, where the river drops into a rock cauldron and churns, and the whole set of features sits in a green valley of banana and tea.

When to go

June to October for the driest access. In the rains the river is high and the rocks are slippery. Mornings are clearest before the highland cloud builds.

Things to know

The rocks are slippery and unfenced and there have been accidents. Guides at the site expect payment and negotiate hard. The walk down and back up is steep.
