Iskanderkul, cradled among the rugged Fann Mountains, is one of Tajikistan's most beautiful and accessible natural wonders, a stunning triangular lake whose vivid turquoise-and-emerald waters are ringed by dramatic, snow-dusted peaks. Its name means Alexander's Lake, after Alexander the Great, who legend says passed this way. A short walk from the shore, the Fann Niagara waterfall thunders spectacularly into a gorge. With its clear mountain air, scenic shore, hiking trails and simple guesthouses, the lake is a magnet for trekkers and lovers of alpine beauty.

When to go
June to September, the mountain summer, for the best weather, accessible roads and hiking; even in summer, the altitude keeps the air cool and nights cold. The lake and waterfall are at their most spectacular in the clear light of the high-summer months. Outside this window, snow blocks access.
Honest expectations
The mountain road in is rough and best tackled with a sturdy vehicle or arranged transport, and facilities around the lake are basic guesthouses and camping, so it suits adventurous travellers rather than those wanting comfort. It can be reached as a long day trip from Dushanbe, but an overnight is better. The lake's vivid turquoise beauty amid the dramatic Fann Mountains, though, is genuinely breathtaking and a highlight of the country.
Nearby
The Fann Mountains, the Seven Lakes and the city of Dushanbe are within reach.
