Rudaki Mausoleum

Rudaki, who died around 941, is regarded as the founder of classical Persian poetry, and he was born and buried at Panjrud in the hills east of Penjikent. His grave was identified in 1940 by the writer Sadriddin Ayni, working partly from the poems themselves, and confirmed by excavation in 1956; a mausoleum was built over it, later rebuilt on a larger scale. A museum beside it covers his life and the Samanid period he wrote in.

When to go

April to October is the season; the road up is difficult in winter. Rudaki commemorations bring visitors. Mornings are quietest.

Practical notes

The present buildings are modern and there is little of any age to see. The identification of the grave rests on twentieth-century scholarship rather than continuous tradition. Museum labelling is in Tajik and Russian.
