The Bibi Fatima springs rise in a small cave on the slope above Yamchun fortress at around three thousand two hundred metres, the water coming out hot and heavily mineralised into a rock pool inside the chamber. They are named for the daughter of the Prophet, and women have come here for a very long time hoping for children, which is the tradition attached to the site. Men and women bathe at separate times.
What you actually see
- The cave pool - hot mineral water in a rock chamber on the mountainside.
- The mineral deposits - the white crust the water has built on the rock.
- The valley view - the Wakhan spread out below the springs.
- The fertility tradition - the long-standing reason women come here.
When to go
May to October is the season; the road up is difficult in winter. Bathing hours alternate between men and women and must be checked. A GBAO permit is required.
Honest expectations
Bathing times are segregated and turning up at the wrong hour means waiting. The water is very hot and the chamber is confined. Facilities are minimal and privacy limited.
Nearby
Yamchun fortress is below, and Ishkashim is west.
