Dumayr Temple

The temple at Dumayr is one of the most complete Roman buildings in Syria and one of the least visited: a third-century shrine of Zeus Hypsistos standing to its full height in the middle of a modern town, its cella walls, towered corners and carved doorways intact because it spent centuries as a fortress and later sat buried to the lintels. Inscriptions in Greek and Palmyrene speak to the crossroads it served on the Damascus-Palmyra road. The building's survival owes everything to reuse: fortress, mosque and dwelling in turn, each keeping the roof on.

When to go

March to May and September to November are mild; summer on the steppe edge is hot. Light is best early and late.

Good to know

Opening is informal - finding the key-holder can be the visit's main task. Interpretation is absent. The surrounding town is entirely workaday.
