Tekkiye Suleymaniye
Sinan's riverside complex in Damascus, pencil minarets over the Barada.

The Tekkiye Suleymaniye is Istanbul on the Barada: built in the 1550s to designs of the great Ottoman court architect Sinan for Sultan Suleiman, it served pilgrims assembling for the Hajj caravan. A domed mosque with two pencil-slim minarets faces a courtyard pool, flanked by ranges of small domed cells and kitchens in banded black-and-white stone. It is the finest Ottoman ensemble in Syria, a serene set piece minutes from the National Museum.

When to go
March to May and September to November are mild. Late afternoon light favours the courtyard. Prayer times govern the mosque itself.

Interior access varies and parts have housed craft stalls or sat closed. The complex has needed care in recent years. The courtyard alone still justifies the stop.
