First Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk was opened in 2015 at the top station of the Grindelwald First gondola: a narrow steel walkway fixed to the cliff below the terrace, running about forty metres along the face with the ground a long way beneath, then out onto a cantilevered platform of some forty-five metres that projects into open air with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau opposite. It is free with the lift ticket, which is why almost everyone who comes up does it. It is a constructed attraction rather than a mountain feature - the honest framing - and it sits alongside the other engineered activities at First: a zip line, a mountain cart run and a scooter descent to Grindelwald.

What you actually see

• A walkway on the cliff face - steel bolted to the rock below the station.
• A 45-metre cantilever - the platform projecting into open air.
• The Jungfrau trio opposite - Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau across the valley.
• Engineered activities alongside - zip line, carts and scooters from the same station.

When to go

June to October, or the winter season. Two hours with the ride.

Honest expectations

It is a built attraction, not a hike, and it is crowded whenever the gondola runs. The platform is exposed and can close in wind. Cloud removes the view entirely. The gondola is expensive on its own.
