The Aescher-Wildkirchli guesthouse stands on a narrow ledge with an overhanging limestone wall directly above it, and the image of it has travelled far beyond Switzerland - it has been on magazine covers and in lists of the world's most striking guesthouses, which has brought volumes of visitors that a building on a ledge cannot easily absorb. Getting there from the Ebenalp cable car means walking down through the Wildkirchli caves, where excavation found Neanderthal-era tools and cave-bear remains, making them among the highest prehistoric occupation sites known in Europe. A hermitage chapel sits in the rock beside them. Below, the Seealpsee lies in a bowl, an hour further down.

What you actually see

  • A guesthouse under an overhang - the ledge building that became a global image.
  • The Wildkirchli caves - Neanderthal-era finds at unusually high altitude.
  • A hermitage in the rock - the chapel beside the caves.
  • Seealpsee below - the lake an hour further down the path.

When to go

May to October. Half a day, longer with Seealpsee.

Honest expectations

It is extremely busy - the guesthouse cannot seat the numbers that arrive, and queues are normal. Overnight stays book out far ahead. The path down through the caves is steep and wet. Facilities are minimal for the crowds.

Nearby

Seealpsee is below; the Santis and Hoher Kasten are along the Alpstein.
