Marika Wachtmeister started showing sculpture in the park at Wanas in 1987 and the programme has run since, commissioning artists to make work for specific places in the grounds rather than importing finished pieces - which means most of what is here was made for the tree, the slope or the wall it stands against. Around seventy works are permanent, by Jenny Holzer, Ann Hamilton, Antony Gormley, Yoko Ono and others, set through beech woodland, pasture and around the medieval castle and its farm buildings. New commissions are added each season. The castle itself is a private home and not open; the barn holds indoor exhibitions and a shop.

Honest expectations
It closes for the winter. The castle is private and not part of the visit. Paths are unsurfaced and muddy after rain. You need a car to get there.
