Vildmarksvagen

The Wilderness Road is a marked loop of roughly five hundred kilometres through the interior of Jamtland and southern Lapland, and its high point is Stekenjokk, where the road crosses an open plateau at about eight hundred metres with no trees in any direction - a stretch that is closed from mid-October to early June because it fills with snow. Along the loop are Hallingsafallet's gorge, the Bjurafallet, the Fatmomakke church town, the Vojmasjon lake and a good deal of forest and bog. There is very little settlement: fuel and food need planning, and long sections have no phone coverage. Reindeer are frequently on the road on the plateau.

What you actually see

• The Stekenjokk plateau - eight hundred metres, no trees, closed in winter.
• Hallingsafallet and Bjurafallet - gorge and waterfall on the route.
• Fatmomakke church town - on the western side of the loop.
• Very little settlement - long stretches of forest and bog.

When to go

June to mid-October, while the plateau road is open. Two to four days.

Honest expectations

The Stekenjokk section is closed more than half the year. Fuel stations are far apart - plan ahead. Phone coverage is patchy to absent. Reindeer on the road are a real hazard.
