Ulvon lies off the High Coast and was a herring station from the middle ages, with crews coming out for the season and living in huts along the harbour. The fishermen's chapel of 1622 survives with an interior painted in 1719 by Roland Johansson Ohman, covering the walls and ceiling in biblical scenes - a small building with a great deal going on inside it. The island is the historic centre of surstromming, the fermented Baltic herring, and one of the remaining producers still cans it here. Ulvohamn is the village; the rest of the island is forest and rock with paths, and the land is still rising from the last ice age.

Honest expectations
Boats are seasonal and weather dependent. The island is largely closed the rest of the year. Accommodation is limited. Surstromming is an acquired taste and is not eaten indoors.
