Trysunda

Trysunda's harbour is a natural horseshoe cut into the rock, sheltered from every direction, which is why fishermen used it and why the village grew round the water's edge in a single curve of red cottages and boat sheds. The chapel dates from the 1660s and has a painted interior. About a dozen people live here year round. The rest of the island is a nature reserve of pine forest, bare rock and small coves, with paths across it and a swimming place on the far side. It is part of the High Coast, where the land has risen roughly three hundred metres since the ice left and is still rising.

What to look for

• A horseshoe natural harbour - sheltered from every direction.
• Red cottages round the water - in a single curve.
• A chapel of the 1660s - painted inside.
• A nature reserve island - pine, rock and small coves.

June to August; boats stop outside the season. A full day.

Good to know

Sailings are few and cancelled when the weather turns. Facilities are minimal - one seasonal cafe. There is no shop. Mosquitoes can be bad in early summer.
