Trelleborgen

Excavation in 1988 found a circular rampart under the middle of Trelleborg, of the type known from Denmark at Trelleborg, Fyrkat and Aggersborg and usually dated to the late tenth century, around the reign of Harald Bluetooth. About a quarter of the ring was reconstructed on the excavated line - timber palisade, earth bank and gate - with the rest marked in the paving so you can read the full circle through the modern streets. A longhouse inside holds a small museum. It is a town-centre site rather than a landscape one, hemmed by buildings, and free to walk into.

Only a quarter stands and it is reconstruction, not original fabric. The setting is a built-up town centre. The museum is small and seasonal. Trelleborg is chiefly a ferry port.
