Einar Wallquist came to Arjeplog as the district doctor in 1922, covering an enormous and roadless area by ski, boat and reindeer, and over decades he collected Sami silver - collars, brooches, spoons, belt fittings - along with everyday objects, much of it acquired on his rounds. The museum opened in 1965 to hold it and remains the main collection of Sami silver in Sweden. Alongside the silver are exhibitions on the mountain region, on Wallquist himself and on the silver mining at Nasafjall in the seventeenth century that gives the road its name. A research institute on mountain and Arctic subjects works from the same building.

June to August for full opening. An hour and a half.
Honest expectations
Winter hours are short or by arrangement. It is a small museum. Labelling is stronger in Swedish. Arjeplog is remote and needs a car.
