The Jokkmokk Winter Market has been held on the first weekend of February since 1605, a gathering of the Sami and of traders in a small town just above the Arctic Circle. In deep cold and snow it brings reindeer races, duodji handicraft, food, music and culture, the great annual meeting point of the Sami year.

When to go

It is a single February weekend, so it needs planning far ahead, and accommodation in tiny Jokkmokk books up a year in advance. The cold is severe, so serious warm clothing is essential. It is a living Sami event, so approach it with respect rather than as a show.
