Jokkmokk Winter Market

The Jokkmokk Winter Market has been held on the first weekend of February since 1605, a gathering of the Sami and of traders in a small town just above the Arctic Circle. In deep cold and snow it brings reindeer races, duodji handicraft, food, music and culture, the great annual meeting point of the Sami year.

What to look for

• Sami handicraft - the duodji of knives, silver, horn and reindeer leather.
• Reindeer - the herds, races and the culture built around them.
• Market stalls and food - traders and northern specialities in the cold.
• Culture and music - joik singing, seminars and Sami cultural events.

When to go

The first weekend of February, the only time it happens, so a trip must be timed to it. Dress for extreme Arctic cold, often well below freezing.

Before you go

It is a single February weekend, so it needs planning far ahead, and accommodation in tiny Jokkmokk books up a year in advance. The cold is severe, so serious warm clothing is essential. It is a living Sami event, so approach it with respect rather than as a show.
