Kvikkjokk

Kvikkjokk sits where the road stops, at the point the Tarra and Kamajokk rivers come down into Saggat, and the delta they have built - a maze of gravel bars, channels and willow that shifts from year to year - is the feature people photograph, best seen from the hill above. Silver was mined and smelted here in the seventeenth century using Sami labour under compulsion, and a church and a few houses are the remains of that settlement. The village is now a gateway: the Kungsleden passes through, Sarek is immediately north, Padjelanta west, and a touring club station provides beds. Boats run across the lake to the trailheads.

Before you go

The village is tiny with very limited services. Boat connections to the trailheads run a short season. Mosquitoes are severe in July. Sarek beyond has no trails or bridges.
