Kladesholmen
A small Bohuslan island that has salted and canned herring for centuries and still supplies much of the country.

Kladesholmen is a rock island off the south end of Tjorn, joined by bridge, and it has processed herring since at least the seventeenth century - through the great herring periods when the fish came into these fjords in enormous quantities and through the collapses in between. The salting houses along the water became canneries, and the island still holds several producers who supply pickled herring to Swedish tables, particularly at midsummer and Christmas when the dish is obligatory. The village is white houses packed on rock with a herring museum in an old salting house. There is a hotel and restaurant on the water and a bathing place on the seaward side.
What you actually see
- Salting houses turned canneries - along the waterfront.

Honest expectations
The factories are working plants, not open to walk round. The museum is small and seasonal. The island is quickly walked. Out of season most services close.
