The hall opened in 1874 to a design by Victor von Gegerfelt, who borrowed the pointed arches and steep gable of a stone church and built them in timber and glass with no internal columns, so the trading floor is one clear span. The nickname followed immediately and stuck. It worked as the city fish market for close to a hundred and fifty years, with different traders and restaurants inside; a long restoration began in 2021, and since then a single tenant runs the seafood sales and restaurants. It sits on the canal in the middle of town, a few minutes from Haga and the Avenyn.

Practical notes

It is smaller inside than the exterior suggests. Restaurant prices are high. It closes early and on Sundays. The restoration changed the balance from market to dining.
