Windy Hill is a low grassy promontory on Geoje's southern coast above the cove at Dohangpo, and its name is literal - the wind comes off the open sea across it constantly, which is why the grass is short and there are no trees. A wooden windmill stands at the top, built as a set piece rather than for any purpose, and it is the thing everyone photographs, with the sea, the cove and the offshore rocks behind it. The walk up from the car park takes about ten minutes on a path and steps. The place became well known through Korean television dramas and films shot there and is firmly on the Geoje circuit as a result, so on a weekend the small summit has a queue for the windmill photograph. Below the headland is a shingle shore and a fishing cove; along the coast are Haegeumgang, the Sinseondae cliffs and the Geoje coastal road, which is the real attraction of this side of the island.

What you actually see

  • The windmill - the wooden set piece on the grass summit.
  • The cove - Dohangpo below the headland.
  • The open sea - the south coast and its offshore rocks.
  • The wind - constant off the water, which names the place.

When to go

April to June and September to October. Late afternoon for light. Weekends bring queues for the windmill photograph on a small summit.

Honest expectations

It is small - an hour at most, and essentially one view. The windmill is decorative, not historic. There is no shelter from the wind, which is the point but is cold out of season.

Nearby

Haegeumgang and Sinseondae are along the southern coast; Hakdong beach is west.
