Ttangkkeut means land's end, and the cape at Galdu in Haenam is where the Korean mainland stops - the point from which distances used to be measured southward, and the traditional end of the peninsula in the old phrase running from Hamgyong to Haenam. A monument shaped like a sail stands on the rocks at the tip, reached by a path down from the car park or by a coastal walkway, and above it on the hill is an observation tower with a view over the archipelago of the south-west, with a monorail running up if the climb does not appeal. Ferries to Bogildo and the southern islands leave from the harbour below. The setting is straightforward rather than dramatic - low rocky shore, pine, sea and islands - and the appeal is the idea of the place as much as the view. Duryunsan and Daeheungsa temple are inland, and the sunsets here are the regional boast.

What you actually see

  • The land's end monument - the sail-shaped marker on the rocks.
  • The observation tower - the view over the island archipelago.
  • The monorail - the lift up the hill from the shore.
  • The ferry harbour - departures for Bogildo and the islands.

When to go

April to June and September to November. Late afternoon for the sunset over the islands, which is what the cape is locally known for.

Honest expectations

The site is modest - a monument, a tower and a walkway. Monorail and tower are charged. It is a long way from anywhere; Haenam town is about an hour from Mokpo, and the cape another 45-50 minutes beyond.

Nearby

Daeheungsa and Duryunsan are inland; ferries run to Bogildo from the harbour.
